SPIN-Dementia Network Plus Sandpits

What is a ‘sandpit’?

SPIN-D aims to run a series of interactive, creative ‘sandpit’ workshops that bring together people affected by dementia, researchers, clinicians, social care professionals, charities, and industry partners. These events will give everyone an equal voice in shaping research ideas, priorities, and practical solutions. This approach ensures that research priorities are shaped through genuine co-production, supporting innovation that reflects the real needs and experiences of diverse communities.

What is the purpose of a sandpit?

The ideas that emerge from each sandpit will lead directly to small, collaborative research projects funded through our Flexible Fund. This fund will mainly support early-career researchers (ECRs) through small project grants, internships, and seed funding. At least twelve small projects will be supported, with funding awarded through a transparent, peer-reviewed process within the network. Together, the sandpits and the Flexible Fund aim to strengthen connections between academia, health and social care, voluntary organisations, and people affected by dementia.

How can I get involved?

We plan to hold between four and six sandpits over the lifetime of the network, taking place roughly every six to nine months. Around 30 participants will attend each event.

We will announce sandpits on our website, social media and through our network newsletter. Join our network to keep up to date with announcements.
